   It’s not either “eliminate social security and watch old people die in the streets” or “live with the system until it becomes an impossibly large problem”. What needs to be done is to pay every dime that was stolen back. Everyone will get everything that was stolen back at once, then they can decide what to do with it.

   This is not complicated. For the period that the baby boomers are retiring RAISE THE TAX (it ‘s NOT a dirty concept); SIMPLE tax rise — cut the tax to ZERO on the first $10,000 you make and REMOVE the CAP on social security taxes (all you tax refusniks and benefit cutters do know that salaries over $100,000 STOP PAYING social security taxes, didn’t you?) Once the “bubble” is past, lower it again. And cut the military down so we only spend 1/2 what the rest of the world does instead of MORE!

   We have to cut some parts of social security and medicare. 43.9% of the federal budget is entitlement/welfare spending. Its the largest and fastest growing portion of the budget. And since we have a debt to GDP ratio at 94.7%, $1.3 trillion deficit, and a sluggish economy (sluggish economy means less tax revenue) we have to cut some portions of it. Everything from the budget is gonna have to suffer some cuts pretty soon if the U.S. is serious about our financial crisis.

   There is only one problem with Social Security and that is “Politicians” They cant keep there greedy little fingers out of it. That is why Al Gore wanted to put it in a lockbox to be used for only what it was ment for, to supplement middle class retired people and nothing else. Social Security is like a saveings account that you pay into your whole working life, and should not be confused with a form of wellfare. Its your money not theirs.,,,,,,,

    I have a great idea of how to save social security. Cut the military budget in half. That way instead of having a budget larger than every other countries budget combined we can have just half of that and still be overmilitarized. WHY THE FUCK DO WE HAVE MILITARY TROOPS IN DAMN NEAR EVERY COUNTRY IN THE WORLD? That shit cost money we could use hear. Half our goverment budget is for war….. who are we fighting against? I know lets create wars so we can justify our military.

    @Silveracity I have paid into this and then when I need it then you cut it?! I have paid all my Social security. I also have taxable income from my disability. I a, still paying taxes. I onlt demand that the US government pay back the trillions they stole oh I mean borrowed from SS to pay someone like you in tax cuts!!!

    I am disabled, on SSDI and am still paying taxes on my disability insurance.I am on Medicare, AARP, Medicaid for disabled people. I have paid into this and then when I need it then you cut it?!? This is crap. Tax the rich more, cut defense, end these useless wars, stop bailing out bankers, stop robbing from the poor and giving to the rich, SS and Medicare are only a small fraction of our deficit. End the Fed that looses trillions of dollars and we have to pay it back.

    @mtb416 I certainly wasn’t saying the Democrats were innocent either. Social security and Medicare are two of their prized sows, just like defense is to the Republicans. However, both parties are going to have to compromise and make some pretty serious cuts to all three if they’re going to get serious and stop clowning around. We got fat over the last ten years and now it’s time for a New Year’s resolution to cut back a couple trillion.

    @stutwostep Bush tried to tackle Social Security and he was literally yelled at by an entire house of Democrats. It was during a State of the Union address. The people in the way of SS/medicare reform are Democrats.

    @quizerry So, are you saying there’s something wrong with Social Security and Medicare and that we should cut it or eliminate it? We owe alot to our seniors. They worked all those years! Why would the Government want to cut those benefits? Anyway, we all want to live longer and be more productive and even look better and still draw Social Security.

    government waste is NOT in social security and medicare. they are programs that are solvent and it’s the politicians who need to quit robbing these surpluses to pay for the trillions of dollars in bullshit like useless wars and tax subsidies to giant corporations… who most of the time don’t even pay any taxes!

    @romanmir01 ~ the swiss currently pay more (per capita percentage) in personal taxes than americans do.

    the defense industry in america is now over 50% of all discretionary spending.

    sales taxes are “state” taxes with local counties and municipalities tacking on for their specific needs. sales taxes don’t pay for the military, interstates, or federal courts.
